MELINA STERLING

My name is Melina Sterling and I'm a solo singer-songwriter creating alternative folk melodies with haunting vocals, melancholic open-tuning fingerpicking, and deeply intimate stories. I know bios are meant to be written in the third person, but I'd rather talk right to you.

Born in Costa Rica, the wildness and magic of that home has always lived in my free spirit. Then raised and based out of Edmonton, AB, the peacefulness and community of this city has provided me the safe space to deepen my musical practice.

My journey with music started early as could be, my father strumming soft melodies on the guitar to my unborn ears. I can't remember when I picked up my first guitar, but it's always been present throughout my life. I played violin for three years as a child, and bass clarinet in Jazz and Concert Ensembles for six more. It wasn't until I spent some time performing in Vancouver did I really surrender to the acoustic guitar, my instrument of choice. 

Through raw, intimate storytelling, I bare my heart and soul on stage, creating a space where storytelling becomes a powerful connection. I hope my music resonates as a reminder that love and connection are transformative forces. That our vulnerability, sharing our creation with the world, is what heals us. Moves us.

​Having overcome significant mental health challenges, I bring a melancholic, yet grounded and playful presence to my performances, balancing tender moments with a warm dose of humour. With every song, I strive to showcase the beauty in honesty, with every intention to inspire others to share their truths and find connection through art.
